The book focuses on writing because it is this communication mode that demands, and allows time for critical thinking, logical organization, and exact diction. Arranged according to the growing complexity of the demands of the tasks, the book starts off with the active reading strategy of visual text mapping and the basic writing skills of summarizing, paraphrasing, and outlining. Units II to V begin to underscore the importance of critical thinking which the authors believe to be the anchor of effective communication in general, and writing in particular. Units II and III take up evaluative writing, specifically the allied forms of critique, reaction paper, and position paper. The two units underscore the critical role of logical thinking in the formation and articulation of opinions. Pointers and exercises are given to hone the skill of forming reasoned judgements but at the same time the units explain how effective use of emotional appeals may achieve greater impact on the target readers. The writing of a concept paper takes center stage in Unit IV. The focal activity of the unit entails cooperative learning as students groups are each tasked to prepare a project proposal addressing any need of the school.

The last unit of the book takes up the writing of field and technical reports, specifically laboratory reports, survey reports, and data commentaries. The topics and exercises are prepare learners to transform raw data into information, something they are expected to do in the real world.
