"As today's levels of knowledge are strongly focused on science and technology as means of achieving the goals of a material universe, the need for humanistic study in the curriculum of basic education serves as an imperative factor to the total development of the human personality. The discipline enables the human person to cope not only with the necessity of material survival but also the assurance of the quality of living worthy of his humanity.

The rationale for the preparation of this textbook is to contribute to the achievement of genuine and holistic education for the students to be sufficiently equipped to balance the needs of their physical being with ultimate strengthening of their human spirit and the making of their souls. Thus, the expectation is for them to develop those values of sympathy and empathy as well as their sensitivity to appreciate beauty through various artworks. The study will also acquaint them with other people's cultures, thus deepening their understanding of themselves and other human beings.

This book offers only small, enticing samples from an enormous cultural buffet of our country. To dine more fully, students are encouraged to go beyond the sampling presented at this table; and for the most sumptuous feasting, nothing can substitute for the first-hand experience. Students, therefore, should make every effort to supplement this book with visits to art museums, art exhibits, and galleries, concert halls, theaters, and libraries.
