Summary: "The invention of symbolic algebra in the early seventeenth century, led mathematicians to a more abstract approach to mathematics. These tools are indeed very powerful, and they often need only a calculating capability instead of a deep understanding of the problems. However, especially in the nineteenth century, an analytical approach seemed to be safer than a geometrical one, and the drawing as a means was excluded from most books of mathematics, which had a negative impact on learning. Every day we are surrounded by space, and the shape of things. The very planet we live on is situated in a universe full of interesting stars, surrounded by other planets. All of them have different shapes and sizes. To be able to understand the wonder of the world's shape and appreciate it, we need to be able to understand and have knowledge of spatial use. In other words the areas related to space and the position, size and shape of things in it. When we know how to apply and understand the relationship between shapes and sizes we will be better prepared to use then in our everyday lives. Geometry will assist us in doing that, because it provides the knowledge of how to deal with measurements and relationships of lines, angles, surfaces and solids. Core Concepts in Mathematics: Geometry focuses on the key topics that provide a strong foundation in the essentials of geometry. Nowadays students have a very poor geometrical insight, the main fault for which lies in the scholastic institutions. Most of them cannot comprehend the large amount of information that a drawing contains, in spite of the existence of a great variety of geometrical software packages designed to construct and dynamically modify figures in order to verify guesses about their properties. This book presents an array of topics that introduce the reader to key ideas in active areas in geometry. The material is presented in a way that students should find accessible and enticing. Packed with useful, up-to-date information, this clear, concise book is valuable learning tool and reference source for anyone who wants to improve his or her understanding of basic geometry. The DVD is also a useful tool for teachers to teach with digital resources in classroom and do a great job of illustrating skills and techniques that are otherwise difficult to explain."
