Summary, etc. |
"The set theory was developed by George Cantor in 1845-1918. Today, it is used in almost every branch of mathematics and serves as a fundamental part of present-day mathematics. Set theory is a branch of mathematical logic that studies set, which informally are collections of objects. Although any type of object can be collected into a set, set theory is applied most often to objects that are relevant to mathematics. The language of set theory can be used in the definitions of nearly all mathematical objects.
Core Concepts in Set Theory introduces set theory, mathematical induction, and formalizes the notion of mathematical functions. The material is mostly elementary. For those of you new to abstract mathematics elementary does not mean simple. In this book, we will learn about representation in roster form and set builder form, types of sets, cardinal number of a set, subsets (Proper subset, super set, power set), number of proper subsets, universal set, operation on sets (Union, intersection, difference and complement of sets). Rather, elementary means that the material requires very little previous education to understand it. Elementary material can be quite challenging and some of the material in this book, if not exactly rocket science, may require that you adjust your point of view to understand it. Although the necessary logic is presented in this book, it would be beneficial for the reader to have taken a prior course in logic under the auspices of mathematics, computer science or philosophy. In fact, it would be beneficial for everyone to have had a course in logic, but most people seem to make their way in the world without one. This is a classic introduction to set theory, from the basics through to the modern tools of combinatorial set theory. This book provides students of mathematics with the minimum amount of knowledge in logic and set theory needed for a profitable continuation of their studies.
The DVD is also a useful tool for teachers to teach with digital resources in classroom and do a great job of illustrating skills and techniques that are otherwise difficult to explain."-- |
